No time is spent travelling to work if you work from home. If you need to meet customers or suppliers only occasionally and your home is not a suitable venue then perhaps you can hire a room in somebody else’s premises for the odd half day. You cannot usually manufacture from home, būt you can certainly run an office, while garages, atties and spare bedrooms can often be commandeered to provide storage space.

Telephones, filing cabinets, photocopiers and office equipment do not work any less efficiently when located in a bedroom rather than on business premises. Also, you can hopefully use members of your family to do odd jobs for you for free (answering the telephone, filing or a little typing).

Knitting collars can be washed and ironed more easily if you sew them to a patch of white fabric beforehand.

Use an ammonia solution (1 part ammonia to 10 parts water) to clean the lining of a men’s hat.

Clean sweat stains off a felt hat with burnt magnesia – rub it into the stain and clean it off with a brush when it gets dry.

White fur can be cleaned well with starch or semolina. Especially soiled fur should be cleaned with a mix of starch and petrol – rub it in against the grain and clean it off along the grain.

Lightly soiled upper clothes made from fake and natural fur, and raincoat fabrics can be cleaned and washed at home. Here are three pieces of advice on how to clean different fabrics. Clothes made from fake fur.

These can’t be washed because their base shrinks (except for astrakhan). For this reason it is best to bring heavily soiled clothes to a dry cleaner’s. Only the topmost layer of hair can be cleaned at home. Dissolve 2-3 spoonfuls of neutral washing powder in a liter of warm water (35-45°C) and make it foam. Adding baking soda to the rinse water – one teaspoon per liter – will help bright red and blue fabrics to remain vibrant.

If you want to refresh the color of your black garments, add a pinch of salt to the water before rinsing.

Colored woolen thread can be made lighter in color by moistening it with cold water and then submerging it into boiling water. After 2-5 minutes, rinse them in cold water a few times.

Add some vinegar into the water when rinsing red and light blue fabrics, and ammonia when rinsing pink fabrics. This will make the colors brighter.

Sometimes a button gets ripped out when washing clothes in a washing machine. To avoid this, fasten all the buttons and turn the clothes inside out before washing.

If the cuffs of a sweater became stretched, tie them up tightly and put them in very hot water.

Laundry

Two tied women’s socks can be used as an excellent hanger for hanging shirts, dresses and sweaters. Such a hanger prevents clothes from getting deformed. Simply insert one of the socks into the sleeve of a shirt, sweater or dress and pull out the other end through the neck. Do the same with the other sock. Then hang the ends of both socks on a drying line.
Jewelry should be taken off not only when doing laundry or washing dishes. Cosmetics can also damage them.
