The more complex and extensive the duties which the system must perform the greater the space necessary within the computer’s memory. This is divided into „read only memory“ (ROM) containing permanent stored instructions read by the computer’s centrai processor, and „random access memory“ (RAM), wherein stored data may be added to, deleted from and generally manipulated (RAM contents are lošt whenever the Computer is switched off).

Each generation of microcomputer contains far more memory than its predecessor, while the efficiency of software packages (measured by the amount of memory they occupy while operating) continues to improve. In consequence, there are now few business functions for which software exists which cannot be run on a cheap system. Space no longer represents a major constraint.
