Even though whitening ceilings with chalk is the cheapest method, most people prefer doing it with emulsion (unlike synthetic and oil-based paint it is “breathable”). But whichever method you pick for painting your ceiling, first it has to be prepared accordingly. Wash off old paint using a decorator’s brush and some water.

If the ceiling is especially sooty or heavily stained, mix in some special store-bought chemical compound. If the ceiling has cracks, cover them up with putty – first, make them slightly deeper and wider and then cover with putty. When the putty dries (after about half an hour), polish it with sandpaper. If you noticed that after the previous repair the ceiling got cracked, it may happen again after the new one. In such a case, cover the ceiling with a special screen before painting.

When the ceiling is ready, cover it with the first layer of paint or primer. Do that with a painter’s brush (but don’t spray) so that the paint would adhere to the surface and fill all of the ceiling’s pores. Paint the second layer with a roller or spray it with sprinkler, making sure that the paint covers the ceiling evenly – not too thin, not too thick.

Start the painting process at the furthest corner of the room and move towards the door.

In order to avoid visible paint streaks or stripes that differ in color, paint the whole area in one go.

In order to avoid traces left by a paintbrush (if you’re using a painter’s brush), paint the penultimate layer vertically to the direction of light (windows) and the last one – towards the direction of light.
